How to find a reliable babysitter and childminder in Vienna (and how much it will cost you)

No matter whether you’re a single mom, dad, or the perfect dream team, at some point you just need a good and trustworthy babysitter. With a lot of luck you might get the support of grandma, grandpa, or an aunt, but unfortunately this isn’t always possible for everyone. It’s anything but easy for parents to leave their children alone with a complete stranger and deciding on the “right” babysitter takes a while, so you should start searching in plenty of time. Here we have compiled a list of the most popular childcare agencies and platforms in Vienna, fully explaining to you how they work and how much they cost.

How to find a reliable babysitter and childminder in Vienna:

1. betreut.at

Betreut.at is the biggest and most famous online agency offering childcare in Vienna and other Austrian cities.

How does it work?

The betreut.at website is very easy to navigate. You can register for free and just have to choose what kind of help you need. Besides babysitters you can also find au pairs, childminders, day parents (Tagesmütter), or nannies. The online agency also provides other types of care, including domestic help, animal care, tutoring, and care for the elderly.

During the registration process you need to indicate whether you are looking for help immediately, this week, or this month. Furthermore, the number and age of the children will be asked, as well as tasks that are very important to the parents, such as light housework, pick-up service, food preparation, etc.

After the registration you will now be able to compare different candidates and their profiles. Once you’ve found your favourites, you can now make contact and finally book the right babysitter for the job.

Costs and fees

After the registration you will be able to look at different babysitters and get to know them a bit better through their profiles. The babysitters offer very different prices for their services. While some offer childcare at €7 per hour, others charge €25 per hour.

The website also offers a great and detailed hourly rate calculator to help families and babysitters agree on fair costs. The calculator takes into account location, number of children, the babysitter’s experience, and many other factors to finally calculate a truly fair hourly price. You will also find a detailed guide on the website which serves as an orientation for the price calculation and points out many factors such as how to get there, extra tasks, etc.

According to the betreut.at platform, the average hourly rate for a babysitter with one year of experience in Vienna is currently €9.52 for one child and €10.47 for two children.

The nice thing about this platform is that you will definitely find the right babysitter for your personal needs, wishes, and budget. Furthermore, it also offers the possibility of becoming a Premium Member for €35/month, €70/3 months, or €140/12 months. As a Premium Member you can of course enjoy a number of advantages, such as being able to directly contact childminders, reading unlimited messages, answering applications, and much more.

2. fragfrida.at

Another well-known online platform that arranges babysitters in Vienna is the online agency fragfrida.at.

How does it work?

Fragfrida.at also has a free enquiry/registration process where you have to fill out a questionnaire. However, the questions are a bit more concrete and you have to introduce yourself a little more thoroughly. Afterwards you will be put in contact with different babysitters and can get to know each other. If it comes to a mediation, however, then costs will be charged. The services of the agency include the careful selection of babysitters and offering a contact person for questions during the introduction process and beyond. The agency also clarifies that the babysitters should plan at least 1 year for the job. If a babysitter drops out after a short time, the agency will help to find a new babysitter free of charge.

Costs and fees

While betreut.at does not charge any additional costs beyond the membership fee, with fragfida.at you will have to pay one-time commission costs and costs for a one-time first aid course for children. These differ depending on how often the babysitter comes.

– 1-2 times a week: €290 + €40 € first aid course for children

– 3 times a week: €390 + €40 first aid course for children

– 4-5 times a week: €690 + €40 first aid course for children

– from the 2nd placement: €190 + €40 first aid course for children

Of course, simply getting to know a babysitter doesn’t incur costs; the payments are due as soon as you have chosen a babysitter. The hourly wage is then negotiated between you and the babysitter. On average, however, they suggest €12.50 per hour for one child and €15.50 for two children.

How to find a reliable babysitter and childminder in Vienna:

7. leihoma

Do you already know so-called Leihomas and Leihopas?

This is not a normal childcare, but a trustworthy and person close to the children, almost like a real grandma or grandpa. The idea behind this is to give old people the chance to be useful and take care of children. Many of these Leihomas (strictly translated as “hired grandma”) and Leihopas (strictly translated as “hired grandpa”) do not have grandchildren themselves or live far away from their grandchildren, but would still like to look after children. The goal is to build a family and long-term relationship between the family and the Leihoma/Leihopa.

In Vienna there are several agencies that arrange this kind of childcare. The best known provider with the largest network of Leihomas, however, is the Catholic Family Association of the Archdiocese of Vienna (Katholische Familienverband der Erzdiözese Wien), which arranges over 650 grandmas and grandpas annually.

How does it work?

As a member of the Catholic Family Association (in principle it works without membership), you are able to find a suitable childminder in Vienna for your personal needs and requirements. As already mentioned, these are older people who like to look after children, are qualified, and (of course) have a lot of experience. However, Leihomas and Leihopas are not supposed to be domestic help; they are hired exclusively for child care.

On the website (https://www.familie.at/site/wien/angebote/omadienst) you can fill out a form and will be put in direct contact with the Archdiocese of Vienna.

Costs and fees

For members of the Catholic Family Association, the mediation costs for a Leihoma amount to €60. For non-members, it is €120. The annual membership fee is €65, €45, or €25, depending on the self-classification. The costs for the child care are individually agreed upon with the Leihoma and privately settled, but the association recommends approximately €7/hour plus travel expenses.

Tip:

A part of the costs can even be deducted from taxes if the hired grandparents have been pedagogically qualified in a training course.

8. diebabysitterei.at

Diebabysitterei.at is a platform on which you cannot search for a babysitter yourself, but you can get one.

How does it work?

First of all, you can submit a free and non-binding inquiry via the contact form. In the contact form you will be asked how often you need a babysitter, if you need a driver, and what else is important to you. You will then be put in contact with selected childcare provider and have the opportunity to get to know them. If you decide to get a babysitter, there is then a one-time fee.

Costs and fees

The agency fees:

– €269 for a babysitter on a marginal employment basis

(The marginal employment basis is determined by the applicable marginal income threshold (Geringfügigkeitsgrenze); 2020: €460.66 per month)

– €369 one-time agency fee for a part- or full-time babysitter

– €179 for a backup babysitter

(Price valid for the placement of a 2nd babysitter 10 weeks from the first request)

The hourly wage is then agreed individually with the babysitter. According to Austrian law (collective agreement for childcare), however, the babysitters must earn at least between €9.31 and €16/hour, depending on their experience and other factors.

How to find a reliable babysitter and childminder in Vienna:

9. KIB

KIB children care is a non-profit organization operating throughout Austria that supports families affected by illness. It is organized as a non-profit association which helps parents to manage their children and their job, even if the child falls ill or has to go to hospital, at no extra cost.

How does it work?

In order to receive support, a membership is necessary. To do so, you simply fill out the membership form and send it to KIB. As a member you will then be supported by the organization in the costs that arise from the illness of a child. If your child is sick, you have the possibility to call a 24/7 emergency service and apply for a so-called “emergency mom” who can either take care of your child at home or accompany them to the hospital.

Costs and fees

No matter how many children you have, the membership fee is €14.50/ month. However, there is an additional one-time admission fee of €18. These costs include all children under 18 years of age and you get help for up to three days for each individual case of illness; you can apply for this in full days or in hours.
