Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art

What was life like for common people in the former Habsburg monarchy? How did they make bread without electricity or gas? How did they produce butter at home? The Volkskundemuseum Wien/Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is a museum dedicated to everyday life and culture in Austria and neighbouring countries. Over 100,000 objects and 200,000 photographs from the past are exhibited here to tell the stories of normal people, then they are put in perspective and relation to the present. Toys, kitchen equipment, farming tools, furniture, artistic objects, and more can be discovered in form of a quiz tour through the museum. Moreover, a truly rich programme is offered for schools, kindergartens, and private groups, including guided tours and practical workshops. Topics include life on a farm, healthy eating now and then, culinary culture workshops, healing plants and etheric oils workshops, food- and tool-making workshops, and so much more. Workshops are offered for children and youth aged 3 to 18 years. The Volkskundemuseum Wien/Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art is located on the premises of the Schönborn Palais, which is connected to the lovely Schönborn Park. Our tip: Combine the visit to the Volkskundemuseum with the visit to the Schönborn Park, where you will find three great playgrounds for children of all ages! Or make a stop at the kid-friendly Café Hildebrandt, which is particularly enjoyable on sommer days, thanks to their fairytale-style garden tables!
