Burgtheater

The Burgtheater is an Austrian national theater in Vienna. It is located on the Ringstrasse in Vienna´s 1st district. It´s the most important German-language theatre and one of the most important theatres in the world. The Burgtheater theatre company, among Viennese known as “die Burg”, was created in 1741, making it the second-oldest in Europe. It features a traditional style and speech typical of Burgtheater performances. The design of the Burgtheater makes it one of the most impressive buildings in Vienna, especially with its interiors that boast beautiful frescoes painted by brothers Ernst and Gustav Klimt. Did you know that the beloved Gustav Klimt had a brother who was an artist too? The best way to admire the beauty of the theater, which hosted musical milestones like the premiere of Mozart’s “The Marriage of Figaro” or Beethoven´s First Symphony, is to take a guided tour. The tour will provide you and your children with a fascinating look into the architecture, organization, art, and history of what is one of the biggest and oldest theaters in the world. Guided tours take place every Monday through Thursday at 3 pm in German with an English summary. On the weekends (Friday through Sunday) and every day in July and August, tours are offered in both English and German. Schools and children’s groups can book special, age-appropriate, guided tours. The Burgtheater is a barrier-free theater that pays significant attention to people with different types of disabilities, making it possible for them to enjoy the performances as well. Not only are there barrier-free entrances and chairs in the auditorium, but you can also ask for acoustic amplification or an audio description. For children and young people, the Burgtheater offers a special programme that spans from children´s and youth performances to hands-on lectures and workshops to theater workshops.
