The magnificent Church of St. Charles is widely-considered the most outstanding baroque church and one of the most beautiful buildings in the Austrian capital. It was built by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, a baroque architect of great importance, and finished by his son. The well-known church with the large green cupola is one of the city´s landmarks and among the most-photographed places in Vienna. Inside, the sacred building is just as amazing, with the impressive colourful frescos in the cupola which depict scenes from the life of Saint Charles Borromeo, the Bishop of Milan and patron saint of the Habsburg emperor, to which the Church of St. Charles is consecrated. There´s also a small Museo Borromeo inside the church which has some of its own interesting exhibits, such as Saint Charles’ traveling clothes. Another highlight for all ages is the panoramic elevator that takes you to a platform at a height of 32.5 meters, where you can admire the magnificent frescoes from as close as it gets and enjoy an impressive view into the nave from above. Arguably the best way to enjoy the beauty of the Church of St. Charles is by attending a classical music concert. Masterpieces such as Mozart’s Requiem, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Advent gospel singing are performed here regularly. We recommend you book the tickets in advance. his is typically more interesting for bigger kids and youth. Little kids will be more interested in visiting the Karlsplatz Ressel Park playgrounds, located in front of the Church of St. Charles. In winter, one of the most family-friendly Christmas markets takes place on the Karlsplatz square.
