Dialogue in The Dark is one of the most unique and distinct places to visit in Vienna. Located in the very heart of Vienna, in the Schottenstift, the place consists of nothing but darkness. The objective of the place is to simulate the experience of blind people in their daily lives. How does it feel for a person when they lose one of the most important senses – our sight?
Dialogue in The Dark simulates the experience of blind people in various places such as traffic, a bar, public squares, and workplaces. The experience is very touching. Indeed, experts have often cited Dialogue in The Dark as one of the top destinations for helping children develop empathy. Families and kids will enjoy this tour for its unique offering of blindness simulation.
The tour begins after every 15 minutes consisting of a maximum of 8 persons. The tour takes almost an hour to complete. Most importantly, the guides are blind or visually impaired. Since the tours take place in complete darkness, the common language is more important than otherwise. Regularly, the tours take place in both German and English. On request, there are also other languages available such as Dutch, Frisian, Dari, Danish, Hungarian and Swedish.
It is recommended that you bring children mostly above the age of 6. If your child (regardless of age) needs a light at night to sleep, it will not feel comfortable with the tour in the dark either. In case you´re not sure, don´t worry. The guides are happy to help your child with minor uncertainties – and should it not work, you can stop the tour at any time.
There´s also the option to have the Dinner in The Dark which is interesting for teenagers and adults. It consists of a Darkness tour, and a four-course meal in the darkness afterwards.
Alternatively, you might also want to visit the Hands Up! – a similar concept which simulates the life of deaf people. It´s located in the same place as the Dialogue in The Dark.
