Gänsehäufel Vienna Pump Track, opened in May 2015 as Vienna’s first, wooden, pump track and is a very special attraction for both kids and adults. It’s located at the Gänsehäufel High Ropes Climbing Garden, which is situated in the Gänsehäufel Bad bath. A pump track is a circuit of rollers, banked turns, dirt berms, and other features that you ride without pedaling. It´s a continuous loop designed to be ridden completely by riders who “pump” or generate momentum by moving the body up and down, instead of pedaling or pushing. The movement originates from the pumping motion used by the rider’s upper and lower body as they ride around the track – thus the name “pump track“. The idea behind a pump track is to use the pumping motion to maintain speed around the whole circuit without pedaling. It’s a great workout and lots of fun! While it might sound like an impossible mission, it´s quite the opposite. The learning curve improves quickly and success can be achieved within 20 minutes. Once the “pumping” principle is understood, internalized and the necessary speed achieved, the circuit can be completed several times without pedaling. The best part? No special bike or skill level is needed and no age restrictions are required to ride a pump track. They can be ridden by anyone, including little kids! It’s a great way to improve coordination, balance and bike handling skills, especially for young riders. It also provides the whole family with a lot of fun and a chance to enjoy cycling in a safe, traffic-free environment. Almost any bike or vehicle on wheels can be used, no matter how inexpensive or professional – e.g. BMX bikes, mountain bikes, kids’ bikes, and even kids´ balance bikes can be used on the pump track. All anyone really needs is a bike with knobby tires and a helmet. A pump track can be built from various earth materials, like wood, for even, paved surfaces, like asphalt. Paid admission to the bath or the climbing garden is not required if you only wish to use the Gänsehäufel Vienna Pump Track. Visitors of the climbing garden can use the pump track for reduced admission, while visitors only interested in using the pump track need to pay the full pump track price. Wheels, helmets and protective gear are provided. During opening hours between the 1st of May through the 15th of September, neither longboards nor skateboards can be used on the track!
