Imperial Burial Vault (Capuchins’ Crypt)

The Imperial Burial Vault (Capuchins’ Crypt) is the burial place of emperors, empresses and other members of the Habsburg family. Approximately 150 people have found their final resting place here. The Imperial Crypt is located under the Capuchin Church and over the years, has been enlarged several times. The best artists of the time were commissioned to design the beautiful crypts for the imperial family. Fun fact: Emperors and empresses were buried without their hearts. the hearts of the Habsburgs were buried in the Heart Crypt of the Church of the Augustinian Friars from 1654 to 1878. Burials continue to take place in the Imperial Crypt. The last Austrian empress, Zita, was buried there in 1989 and her eldest son, Otto Habsburg, was been buried there in July 2011. Despite being the Capuchins´ Crypt not exactly the most-entertaining place for children, though it is actually quite interesting, even for the younger audience. We recommend the recently-introduced guided tours for children ages 7-13 (currently only provided in German). As an individual visitor, you can visit the Imperial Burial Vault for free with the Vienna City Pass or Vienna Flexi Pass and for a discounted price, with the Vienna City Card.
