The Imperial Carriage Museum, located in Schönbrunn Mews, is one of Schönbrunn’s most-famous attractions. It features a collection of more than 60 historical state coaches, sledges, and sedan chairs. Besides magnificent carriages, you will also see historical paintings and court robes, which take you for a walk through the history of Austria and the life of famous rulers like Maria Theresa, Franz Joseph and even the French Emperor Napoleon. The highlight is undoubtedly the baroque Imperial Coach, but there are numerous amazing state carriages, travel coaches, and the first Imperial Car. Even funeral and children´s carriages can be seen. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the well-loved Empress Elisabeth, called Sisi, and the life parallels between Sisi and Lady Diana. For schools, kindergartens and private children’s groups, various age-appropriate guided tours are offered which can be tailor-made based on the children´s interests. They can even focus on certain exhibition pieces, like the imperial children’s carriages and strollers or ceremony carriages. Alternatively, comprehensive topics can be chosen, such as life and death, ways of travelling in the past, what is a carriage and more. Either way, every tour will offer children a glimpse of court life – giving details on coronations, weddings and funeral processions, emperors´ travels and merry hunts, children’s games and life. Our tip – after the visit, we recommend taking a walk in the amazing Schönbrunn Palace Gardens, explore the Schönbrunn – Maze & Labyrinth and have a break at the great Schönbrunn Labyrinthikon Playground.
