Leopoldsberg

Leopoldsberg is likely the most-famous Viennese hill. It´s a 425 m. high mountain in Döbling, Vienna´s 19th district. A small Baroque church dedicated to St. Leopold, the Leopold’s Church, sits at the summit of the Leopoldsberg, and is one of the most-prominent of Vienna´s landmarks and clearly visible from Vienna below. You can enjoy a fantastic overview of all of Vienna and its surroundings from the Leopoldsberg, making it perfect for a family day trip on a good weather day. The hill, much like the neighboring hill of Kahlenberg, is comfortably-reached by Bus 38 from Heiligenstadt or by car. The most-rewarding mode of transportation is by hiking through the vineyards from Nussdorf, Kahlenbergerdorf or Grinzing up to the hill. Several paths are part of the official Vienna City Hiking Trail 1a – Leopoldsberg or a deviation of the City Hiking Trail 1b – Kahlenberg, both starting in Nussdorf. Both hiking paths are paved and doable by pram. One of the most-spectacular routes to Leopoldsberg is the Nose Path (Nasenweg) starting from Kahlenbergerdorf (which is very steep and includes many stairs so unsuitable for a buggy). If coming with bigger children or a child carrier backpack, the route is rewarding because there are several viewing platforms along the way. The Leopoldsberg, as well as the Kahlenberg, were both places where some critical past battles took place. Today, you will find several war memorials on Leopoldsberg, like the Heimkehrers´ Gedächtnis (Homecomers´ Memorial) commemorating the suffering of the soldiers during World War II or the Ukrainian Cossacks Memorial, a monument to the Ukrainian Cossacks who participated in Vienna’s liberation from Turkish siege. The area around the Leopoldskirche church is often called the “Cradle of Austria,” because it’s where the Babenberg Markgrave Leopold IV built his first castle to defend his little county against Magyar invaders. You can still see the remains of the original fort. The Leopoldsberg is a mountain that has played an important role in Vienna´s history and makes for a perfect day trip. Combine it with a walk to the Kahlenberg, adventure climbing at the Waldseilpark Kahlenberg, playing on the Elisabethwiese, or trying the Wichtelparcour Kahlenberg.
To return to Nussdorf or Grinzing, take the Heurigen Express Panorama Train.
There are no restaurants on the Leopoldsberg, but you will find great options just a short walk away, like the Josefinenhütte on the Elisabethwiese.
A few meters further, directly on Kahlenberg, visit the Café Kahlenberg or the Sky Lounge Kahlenberg that both feature a fantastic view of Vienna, or grab a pretzel or quick snack from one of the buffets. Last but not least, enjoy one of the numerous Heurigen wine taverns along the way to and directly in the wine villages of Grinzing and Nussdorf.
