Museum Judenplatz

In the Middle Ages, a thriving Jewish community, and one of the largest and most important in Europe, was living in Vienna. Thanks to numerous famous Rabbis who taught and worked here, Vienna became a creative and influential center of Jewish knowledge and maintained that role until 1420 when the infamous period of expulsion, persecution, and murder of Viennese Jews began. This lively and creative environment was forced to an abrupt and violent end in 1420-21, with the expulsion and murder of the Viennese Jews. The Synagogue on Judenplatz square was destroyed as a result. Excavated in 1995, the former Synagogue ruins are now part of the new Museum Judenplatz, which is a branch of the Jewish Museum of the City of Vienna. A Holocaust memorial, designed by British artist Rachel Whiteread, has been unveiled on the Judenplatz square. When entering the Museum Judeplatz, you will be shown a short animation representing the history of Judaism and the Jewish quarter in Vienna in the Middle Ages. A number of museum exhibits will help you to understand the creation, history, and culture of the Jewish Community in medieval Vienna. You will even be able to search the database for lost relatives or friends. For children and young people, a very rich programme is offered in both locations of the Jewish Museum. For details, see the listing of the Jewish Museum. In addition to the workshops, guided tours and events, kids can receive a special children´s version of the audio guide at the Museum Judenplatz. For individual visitors, we recommend buying the ticket online in advance (the combo ticket will enable you to also visit the Jewish Museum within four days). Entrance to the Jewish Museum and the Museum Judenplatz is free with the Vienna Pass and Vienna Flexi Pass and the Vienna City Card provides you with a discount as well.
