The Wiener Musikverein (Viennese Music Association) is a beautiful concert hall in the Inner City of Vienna and the home of the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic orchestra. The Great Hall (Großer Saal), thanks to its highly regarded acoustics, is considered one of the finest concert halls in the world. The Musikverein offers a truly impressive variety of concerts for children, youth, and families, as well as a rich programme for kindergartens and schools. Musical events for children at Musikverein consist of a series for around 50,000 young people between ages 3 and 19, with more than 230 such events taking place each season. The programme for the little ones, starting at around the age of 3 years, consists of three different cycles, each of which is dedicated to a specific topic. The “Topolina” series enables kids to playfully explore the world of classical music together with two musical mice, the mouse girl Topolina and her mouse boyfriend Alberto. The series about “Agathe and her Wunderkoffer” involves looking for answers to all sorts of questions. All of them revolve around a wide variety of musical instruments. The “Kling Kling” series deals with the eternal questions of humanity and the stories people have been telling each other as answers for thousands of years. For kids aged 6 and above, there’s the “Allegretto” series. For more than 25 years, the concert clown Allegretto has been inviting children and accompanying people to his entertaining concerts in the Brahms-Saal. Four programmes present chamber music as well as vocals, storytelling and puppetry, pantomime and dance, fun and excitement, and beautiful music. Dancing, playing, and singing along are welcome! ”Albertos Abenteuer” (“Alberto’s Adventures”) is a completely new series for 6-8 year olds. The “Klassik Hits im Goldenen Saal” series, for everyone aged 11 to 99, is a special offer for young people that also introduces classical music to unfamiliar audiences of all ages. In addition, the “Capriccio! Jugendkonzerte,” for people aged 13 and older, encompasses a broad repertoire taking in all musical styles and allows for interaction between the stage and the audience.
There is also a wealth of events available for kindergartens and schools of all grades, ranging from entertaining concerts to rehearsals for the great orchestral concerts in the Goldene Saal to “meet the artist” discussions that bring conductors, soloists, and orchestra musicians face to face with audiences of young people and their questions. Helpful information: Subscriptions for children’s concerts are in high demand and to sell out extremely fast after their release for sale through Musikverein’s website. Alternatively, tickets for children’s concerts can also be bought as single tickets. The sale on the Musikverein website starts 2 months before the event date, but even these tend to sell out soon as well. Our tip: If you haven’t managed to get a subscription or a single ticket for family concerts or are visiting Vienna with older children, we highly recommend you get a single ticket for the general public.
