Ottakring Forest School is an amazing eco-educational institution located in the Ottakringer Wald in the Vienna Woods. Its primary aim is to educate children about the forest ecosystem in a playful way and teach children how to deal responsibly with nature. Built in 1998, the Ottakring Forest School is the first forest educational information center in Austria. Every year, around 4,000 pupils participate in its exciting interactive educational program.
The offer of the Ottakring Forest School is primarily aimed at school classes, though there are some open days for the general public as well – usually, there´s one family adventure day a year on which families can experience the offer and participate for free.
For school classes from 3rd through 6th grade, the Ottakring Forest School offers day-excursions in the Ottakring Woods area. Children experience an eventful day made of active discovery, playful learning, and practical experience.
Part of the day is spent inside, in the Forest School teaching rooms, while part is spent outside with professionally-trained Forest School foresters. While hiking, playing, and discovering, the children learn interesting facts about the forest and its diverse animal inhabitants from the insects, beetles and little birds to the wild animals. The day is full of adventure – be it exploring the secret places in the woods, walking on rope in the forest, touching the prepared wild animals and birds in the classroom, or examining the tree trunks and wild animal antlers.
Finally, the class will make a barbecue fire and enjoy the preparing of sausages together. Tea and elderberry juice are provided, while sausages need to be brought by participants themselves.
Excursions can be arranged free of charge on any school day and can take place in any weather. The program takes about three hours, starting at 9am and lasting until 3pm. A meeting point can be agreed individually, though it’s usually directly at the forest school or at the Steinhof Fire Station in Johann-Staud-Straße 75. From the fire station, the Forest School can be reached on foot in about 20 minutes.
The Ottakring Forest School is run by the City of Vienna´s s MA49 Department for Forestry and Agriculture and the free forest school excursions are part of the EULE Project, the environmental educational offer for the city of Vienna.
It´s recommended that you register at least two months before your desired date.
