The Church of St. Leopold, also known as the Kirche am Steinhof, is an architectural masterpiece designed by Otter Wagner, one of Vienna´s most-important modernist architects. Located on the outskirts of Vienna and known for its unmistakable copper-plated dome, it´s one of the most astonishing churches in Vienna. It´s also the first church of the Modernism Period in Europe.
Besides Otto Wagner, several great artists collaborated on the project, including Koloman Moser and Othmar Schimkowitz. As with all his works, Wagner united both the aesthetics and beauty with the functionality of the building. He asked practical questions of himself, like “How is the building to be cleaned?” or “How do you make sure that as many people as possible have an unobstructed view of the high altar?” and tried to design the beautiful building with a practical purpose in mind.
The beautiful Otto Wagner Church Am Steinhof is a proper insider tip – not too many tourists make it here because it requires a bit of effort to get here by public transport, being located on the outskirts of Vienna. However, it´s one of Wagner´s masterpieces and worth a visit. It´s also a perfect weekend trip for families, since the church is found in the recreational area of Steinhofgründe – one of Vienna´s prettiest outdoor destinations and a favourite picnic location. You can spend all day hiking or walking in the beautiful green area – plus there´s a cool Steinhofgründe Forest Playground not far from the Church. If you want to visit the church, mind the opening hours as it´s only open for a few hours each week, on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, plus for Mass (Sunday and holidays only).
