Ringstrasse

The Ringstrasse is an Austrian World Heritage site. It´s a majestic boulevard that was laid out in the mid-19th century around the center of the city, replacing the old city wall and the glacis. A number of ornate buildings, such as the Vienna State Opera, Parliament, Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art History Museum) Vienna, Natural History Museum Vienna, Hofburg Imperial Palace, Vienna City Hall, Burgtheater, Musikverein, Urania Observatory, and the Austrian National Library were erected along the resulting boulevard. Other wonderful buildings you will see along the Ringstrasse include the Vienna Stock Exchange, University of Vienna, Church of St. Charles, MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art, Neue Burg, Otto Wagner Pavillon Karlsplatz, Secession, Votive Church, and Weltmuseum Vienna. Additionally, some of Vienna´s most beautiful gardens and parks are located along the boulevard, such as the Burggarten, Volksgarten, and Stadtpark. The latter even boasts several cool playgrounds in its newer part, called Stadtpark Kinderpark. By far the easiest and most comfortable way to experience the Vienna Ringstrasse boulevard with children is via the Vienna Ring Tram. It´s a historic yellow tram that runs along all the most important sites of the Ringstrasse. While several trams are actually partially running on the Ringstrasse, the Vienna Ring Tram is the only one that allows you to complete an entire round on the Ringstrasse boulevard without changing trams. The ride takes approximately 25 minutes and it starts and ends on Schwedenplatz. You will receive an audio guide in 8 languages, plus a special children´s version. You can purchase a ticket for a tour only on the Vienna Ring Tram or a card in Combonation with a Vienna Sightseeing Hop On Hop Off Bus Tour.
