Secession

Secession, the iconic Art Nouveau building with a golden dome, which the Viennese familiarly call the “Leafy Cabbage Dome” is nowadays a leading centre for contemporary art and one of Vienna’s landmarks. However, when the Secession opened in 1898, it caused a lot of controversial debates among Viennese population. The building was designed by a then 30-year-old architect Joseph Maria Olbrich, to become an exhibition space for a new art association founded by Gustav Klimt and a number of other artists. The Association of Visual Artists Vienna Secession is indeed the oldest independent artists-led exhibition institution dedicated to contemporary art in the world. Inside, you will find the famous and amazing Beethoven Frieze by Gustav Klimt, which stretches over three painted walls and is considered one of the key works of Viennese Secessionist movement. The motto of the Secessionist movement is prominently written on the facade of the building: “Der Zeit ihre Kunst. Der Kunst ihre Freiheit” (English: “To each era its art. To art its freedom”). At the entrance, there’s an impressive sculpture of three gorgons representing painting, sculpture, and architecture.
Besides being an exhibition space for international contemporary artists, the Secession is also active in the field of education. Guided tours in German are offered for schools, and in English and French upon request. For families, special guided tours are offered, where parents can experience contemporary art together with their children aged 5+. Another format is the intergenerational workshop for seniors and children and youth.
