Sophienalpe is an alp in Wienerwald, on the outskirts of Vienna´s 14th district, Penzing. It´s a favourite day trip and hiking destination as it boasts a wonderful view and it´s easily reachable by car or by one of the many hiking trails from Exelberg, Neuwaldegg, Schwarzenbergpark, Hameau, Dreimarkstein, Hohe Wand, and other places. It´s called after Duchess Sophie, mother of Emperor Franz Josef, who loved spending summertime here. In the southern part of the Sophienalpe meadow, there´s popular viewpoint, the Franz Karl viewpoint from where you can see Schneeberg and many summits and hills of Vienna Woods, and the Gutensteiner Alps. The highlight for kids is clearly a quirky swings meadow featuring quite possibly the highest number of old-style-swings placed in a row you have ever seen. There´s also a popular destination restaurant, the Sophienalpe Restaurant here which is particularly amable on sunny days thanks to its pretty guest garden. From Sophienalpe, you can take a short stroll or hike to the Mostalm, another high plateau with a destination restaurant, the Mostalm Gasthaus and an old-timer playground. Indeed, the trip to Sophienalpe and Mostalm is kind of an atmospheric ride back in time, in the most pleasant sense of the word. Nostalgic and beautiful, and pretty cool for children. The road between Sophienalpe and Mostalm is easily doable with children and even with a stroller since it´s a wide gravel road; not suitable for a kids bike, though. It´s about 1.5 km in length and will take you about 25 mins., with little kids obviously more.
