St. Stephen’s Cathedral – THE landmark of Vienna.
St. Stephen’s Cathedral is certainly the most famous landmark in Vienna and towers above the rooftops of Vienna’s city centre, unmissable and majestic. Construction began as early as the 12th century, and today, this church is the most important Gothic building in Austria. Together with your children, discover the numerous treasures of this building alone or on a guided tour and enjoy the excellent view of Vienna that you can reach through the 343 staircases to the south tower of the cathedral. You can also visit the famous “Pummerin,” the heaviest and most famous bell in Austria, at the North Tower. The highlight of the guided tours is definitely the visit of the catacombs under St. Stephen’s Cathedral — a really great experience. Admission to St Stephen’s Cathedral is free; however, the catacombs, the viewing tower, and all guided tours are subject to a fee. The extremely central location of the cathedral allows visitors to combine their visit with countless other attractions, such as the Mozarthaus Vienna Figarohaus right next door, the Hofburg Imperial Palace nearby, or the beautiful Butterfly House. Playground situation: unfortunately, there are no playgrounds in the immediate vicinity, but some really great ones are within walking distance. We recommend the Stadtpark – Kinderpark, the Ressel Park at Karlsplatz and the Hermann Gmeiner Park directly behind the Vienna Stock Exchange.
