Stefaniewarte

Stefaniewarte is a 22-meter tall observation tower on Kahlenberg hill in Döbling, Vienna´s 19th district. It´s situated almost 300 meters above the Danube and offers a fantastic view over the Vienna basin, the hills of the Vienna woods and the Danube valley. On a clear day, both the mountains of the Leithagebirge and the Schneeberg, the nearest mountain of over two thousand meters located approximately 70 km south west of Vienna, are visible. Stefaniewarte observation tower was built in 1887 and dedicated to Crown Princess Stefanie, the wife of Crown Prince Rudolf. The viewing tower was built according to designs by famous architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer, whose other works included the Ringstrasse, the Volkstheater and the Ronacher Theater. The Stefaniewarte is operated by Naturfreunde Döbling and open every weekend and public holiday from March to October. To reach the viewing platform, you need to climb 125 steps which might be challenging but definitely worth the view. Adults have to pay a symbolic entrance fee, while children under 15 years get free entry. It goes without saying that you´d better come with a baby carrier or a child carrier hiking backpack if you needed since a stroller would need to stay parked at the entrance. You can reach Stefaniewarte easily after a 5 min walk from Kahlenberg. To get to Kahlenberg, you can either chose the bus 38 or a car, but the most rewarding is hands down hiking up the hill. Many paths will take you here such as the City Hiking Trail 1b – Kahlenberg from Nußdorf or Grinzing, the City Hiking Trail 1a – Leopoldsberg from Nußdorf, the panoramical albeit very steep Nose Path (Nasenweg) from Kahlenbergerdorf. And if you want something extraordinary, consider coming by Heurigen Express Mini Train which will take you through some of the most beautiful Viennese vineyards. For lunch or drink, the nearby simple self-service Cafe Kahlenberg or even the luxurious Skyline Lounge Restaurant Kahlenberg is the most obvious choice; both feature terrace with fantastic view and are reasonably family-friendly.
