Located directly on the Ringstrasse, the Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) is Vienna’s most important non-religious building in the Neo-Gothic style. It is the official seat of the Mayor of Vienna as well as the meeting place of both the city senate/provincial government and the Municipal Council/Landtag.
Besides its political importance, the Vienna City Hall is also an architectonical jewel: : Around 30 million bricks and more than 40,000 cubic meters of natural stone were used for its construction in the late 19th century. It boasts one of the biggest inner courtyards in Europe, the Arkadenhof.
You can visit the Vienna City Hall on a free guided tour which is interesting for bigger children and young adults. Tours are held for individuals on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 1:00 p.m. No registration is required. Free audio guides are available in English, French, Italian, and Spanish.
For families, the best way to experience the Vienna City Hall is arguably the participation on one of the family events. The most popular one, the “Spieltage on Wiener Rathaus” (play days in Vienna City Hall ) is a regular event organised by WienXtra Spielebox several times a year during school holidays for kids of all ages.
Another point of interest is the Vienna City Hall – City Information, an information centre for both locals and tourists located on the ground floor of the building.
In front of the Vienna City Hall, numerous events take place throughout the year. Some of the most famous and also top family-friendly events are the iconic Christkindlmarkt am Rathaus (Vienna’s best known and by far biggest Christmas market) as well as the amazing Vienna Ice Dream-when the whole square transforms into the world’s most beautiful ice-skating rink for the winter months.
