The Volkstheater (People´s Theater), featuring 830 seats, is one of the largest theaters in the German-speaking countries. It opened in 1889 as a “civic counterpart” to the more noble national theatre, nowadays known as the Burgtheater.
Quite understandably, the Volkstheater´s focus relies on Austrian authors, but the repertoire also includes German and international classics.
Volkstheater has an extremely rich offering of workshops for children and youth. Base workshops convey the basic structure of the theater and make participants try out different theatrical forms and languages. There are three primary focus areas: improvisation, text and role work, and language and body expression. The base workshop is always linked to a performance visit at the Volkstheater. Acting workshops and free acting afternoons are available for schools, as well as for individually-interested children and youth. Theme-specific workshops and meetings with theater makers are offered, too – these should give young people a different perspective on the theater. The experimental workshops are interesting and aimed at helping young people understand whether the theater is their vocation, or alternatively, to help them learn to express themselves.
