One of the city landmarks, the Votive Church (German: Votivkirche) is a neo-Gothic church known for its two eye-catching towers. It’s Vienna’s second-tallest church, located in the immediate vicinity to the Ringstrasse. Its construction began in 1856 as a symbol of gratitude for an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the Emperor Franz Joseph in 1853. Funds for construction were collected from folks throughout the Empire. 23 years later, the church was dedicated on the silver anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Empress Elisabeth.
Guided tours are available for schools and other groups on request.
The Votive Church is situated in the middle of a quiet park, the Votive Park. The little park also features a lovely small playground, which is particularly popular in summer since it boasts a water playground. Just opposite, there’s the Sigmund Freud Park, which counts as one of the best places for a picnic in central Vienna. In front of the church, there’s a stop for the Big Bus Hop On Hop Off.
