Wien – Lobau National Park House is the visitor centre for Lobau, and a great place for children, families, and schools. It offers adventure, information, recreation, and fun and it´s also a convenient point to start hiking and cycling tours in the wildness of Lobau. Lobau, an expansive wild forest in Vienna´s 22nd district of Donaustadt, is the Viennese section of the Donau-Auen National Park.
Inside, the visitor centre provides plenty of information on the Lobau, especially on its rich fauna and flora. The highlight for children is the tonAU – a multi-media exhibition where children can listen to the sounds of the forest and learn to identify Lobau animals by their sound. The exhibitions in the house are free, interactive, engaging and fun for kids.
You can also arrange guided tours for schools, kindergartens, and families. Based on the age and interests of the group, they can be tailor-made to fit your needs. You can choose between hiking tours, cycling trips or walking educational tours.
Since the Wien – Lobau National Park House is truly loved by children, they even offer kids birthday parties there! They organize plenty of events for the whole family, most of which are free.
The National Park House is also home to the Forest School Lobau, a unique nature education institution operated by the City of Vienna’s Municipal Department 49 (Forestry Office and Urban Agriculture), just like the National Park House itself.
Nevertheless, the best part and an absolute highlight for most children is the outdoor adventure playground located behind the visitor center, and rightly so. The Playground Nationalparkhaus Lobau is one of the coolest outdoor playgrounds in Vienna. There´s also an expansive quiet garden with picnic tables and trees so you can sit and relax in the shadows, or even have a family picnic.
We recommend you reach the Wien – Lobau National Park House by bike, which is great fun and easily doable with little children. the National Park House is located just off the easy, mostly-flat Danube Cycling Path Vienna – Lobau which is part of the Eurovelo 6 cycling path.
Arriving on foot or by bus are both good options, too. There´s the bus 93A (bus stop Naufahrtbrücke) or the bus 92B (bus stop Raffineriestraße / Biberhaufenweg). Alternatively, you can arrive by car, as there´s a huge free parking lot just in front of the visitor centre. From there, you can also set off for a hiking trip to the Lobau natural bathing locations such as the Dechantlacke or the Panozzalacke.
