Located in Liesing, Vienna´s 23rd district, the SchokoMuseum Heindl is a great experience for any chocolate-lover big or small, and especially for families with kids. The museum is run by the Heindl company, a traditional Viennese confectionery manufacturer and one of the largest confectionary retailers in Austria.
The SchokoMuseum Heindl, Vienna’s first chocolate museum, opened in 2001 at the headquarters of the Confiserie Heindl. Since then, visitors have experienced first-hand production insights from over 180 different confectionery delicacies.
Visitors to the museum can learn more about chocolate and obtain exclusive insight into the production of the Heindl and Pischinger specialties. Guided tours take place regularly, several times per week in German, and occasionally in English. Tours in other languages (including French, Spanish, and Hungarian) can be arranged upon request. For regular guided tours, there’s no need to pre-register.
During the tour, visitors get insight into all phases of chocolate production. All processing steps from the initial cocoa bean to the completed chocolate base are explained, i.e. cultivating, harvesting, fermenting, drying, storing, cleaning, roasting, breaking, grinding, fine-rolling and conching. An interactive room allows you to experience chocolate with all your senses – you can smell the ingredients and feel and taste the chocolate from the fountains. There´s a SchokoKino where you can watch a short movie explaining the many exciting facts about cocoa and chocolate. As part of the tour, you will receive more than 10 different free chocolate samples to taste and get the chance to see the real Heindl chocolate in production. You will watch as employees put each piece of chocolate into packages by hand. Another highlight is the chocolate quiz designed for children.
In addition to regular daily tours in German (except Mondays and public holidays), there are also regular English-guided tours. They currently run every Tuesday and Thursday, but it´s recommended that you check the website for the most up-to-date schedule. Age-appropriate guided tours in multiple languages can be arranged for schools and groups of children.
Chocolate workshops for visitors to create their own confections are held at the SchokoMuseum Heindl. The calendar of chocolate workshops is quite rich and includes workshops for the general public as well as for children starting at 5 years of age. Workshop topics vary, with some continuing throughout the year, like praline workshops and self-made Mozartkugeln chocolate balls, to name a few. Other workshop topics vary by season, like the creation of Easter eggs, Christmas confections, and Mother´s day chocolate hearts.
