Hundertwasser House

Open as of March 1986, the colorful house designed by famous Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser is one of Vienna´s landmarks and most-visited attractions. Its iconic multi-colored facade with asymmetrical windows, uneven walls, onion spires and trees planted on the roof, make this apartment house famous worldwide. Each of the facade’s sections is painted in a different color and marks one apartment. Did you know the Hundertwasser House was actually a social housing building? Around 200 people live in the 50 apartments today. Just as in all of his other works, Hundertwasser wanted to show that practical can also be beautiful, even with a social housing project. Children are great Hundertwasser fans because they can easily identify with his unconventional and playful fairy tale style. A visit to one of his famous buildings should definitely have a place on your bucket list of things to do while in Vienna with the kids. The Hundertwasser House itself cannot be visited. You can only see it from the outside; however, you can visit the picturesque Hundertwasser Village, just opposite the house. Here you will find an original art cafe and little souvenir shops. For a more intense Hundertwasser experience, head to the Kunst Haus Wien – Museum Hundertwasser nearby where kids, youth and adults can learn much about this famous artist, admire his works and participate in age-appropriate guided tours and workshops. You can also visit another iconic building designed by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, the Spittelau waste incineration plant. In addition to its other functions, the famous building with the golden ball on the chimney is home to the Vienna Energy World Spittelau, which offers a great hands-on educational programme for children and youth.
