Marillenalm is truly an insider tip – a lovely, wooded park with a forest playground located opposite the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens and the Schönbrunner Bad. It is located in Meidling, Vienna´s 12th district. While it’s only a few hundred meters away from the famous Schönbrunn attractions, you’ll need to cross a heavily trafficked road, the Grünbergerstraße, to reach the Marillenalm playground from the Schönbrunn side. Most of the playground equipment is made of wood and slightly outdated, but it´s still really cool. Of particular interest is the huge circle-shaped climbing and balancing course with the long slide that ends in a sandpit. During the summer, a lovely sand and mud playground is the highlight. There are also several newer pieces of play equipment, like a lovely carousel, a small climbing net and the not-too-big climbing house with slide and small climbing wall. You´ll also find a great natural football pitch and hanging nets.
What makes the Marillenalm playground so special is the plethora of green space. The playground is just medium-sized, but the whole park is fenced-in and has a relaxing atmosphere thanks to the greenery, shade, and picnic tables. Compared to the beautiful, but heavily-touristed Schönbrunn Palace Gardens across the street, this is a true neighborhood affair. A very calm, almost hidden, piece of forest in the midst of a densely-populated residential area. The name Marillenalm (e.g. apricot alp park) is derived from the many apricot trees that used to grow there. Still today, you can still find some fruit trees.
