Prater Museum is a specialty museum showing the history of Vienna’s legendary entertainment park, the Prater, from its opening in 1766 to present. When Emperor Joseph II opened the former hunting grounds to the public, it was a sensation that immediately became popular with the local folks. Back then, the attractions included spectacular fireworks displays, carousels, Punch and Judy shows, and even experimental balloon flights. In the years to come, the concept of entertainment gradually changed, and so did the Prater Amusement Park. With the World Exposition of 1873, Prater entered its flourishing era and set completely new entertainment standards with theme parks, such as “Venice in Vienna.” Even today, Prater Amusement Park is one of the top attractions for the Viennese and tourists alike while the Giant Ferris Wheel (Wiener Riesenrad) became one of the Viennese landmarks.

The Prater Museum is located in the Planetarium Wien, close to the main entrance to Prater near Praterstern.
For schools, guided tours are offered for kids from age of 9 and older (Kids’ tour theme: a journey into the past of the Vienna Prater). Occasionally, they also offer public tours for families at the Prater Museum.
