Haydn House near the popular Mariahilferstrasse is a museum in the premises of the real residence where the famous composer Joseph Haydn spent the most fruitful years of his life. It’s here where some of his most important works, including “The Seasons” and “The Creation,” were created. Sadly, these were also during Haydn’s old-age years, which were marked by progressive loss of his vitality.
The Haydn House not only reconstructs a lot from the composer’s professional, social, and private life, but it also depicts political and social situation of the Viennese society in the early 1800s.
Do not miss the beautiful garden, which is a proper jewel that was redesigned in collaboration with Vienna City Gardens based on historical models. It’s a small inner garden that reconstructs a typical Viennese bourgeois garden of that time and nowadays represents a green oasis in the middle of a heavily populated and built-in residential and shopping area. It’s believed that Haydn owned the fruit trees in the garden.
For schools and groups of young people, guided tours can be arranged (recommended from the age of 8). Children will learn a lot about Haydn’s life and work as well as about Viennese society in the early 1800s. Many fun facts included! Did you know that Haydn had to earn his living as a choirboy at the age of eight, but had to leave the choir at the age of 17, as the Empress Maria Theresa concluded he already croaked more than sang? That was the turning point in his life when he started his career as a composer. Canon-singing practices (with or without a wig) can be part of the workshop as well!
