MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art

MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art is an important arts museum located directly on Vienna´s Ringstrasse. The focus of the museum is the applied arts at the interface of design, arts, and crafts, as well as architecture and contemporary art; but MAK is far more than just a museum. It´s a space for experimentation, discussion, and exploration: How do current social and political issues interact with our perspective of contemporary art? What are the implications of actual ecological and cultural challenges for the applied arts, architecture, and design? What are the implications for day-to-day life? Based on the modern understanding of the applied arts, the MAK strives to yield concrete benefits for our everyday life.
The MAK – Austrian Museum of Applied Arts / Contemporary Art is also an important institution in the field of arts education. For over 150 years, it’s offered an impressive learning program for youth, children, and adults.
Mini MAK is a program developed specially for children ages 4 years and older and their family. It includes guided tours and workshops, enabling children to experience new exhibitions and interesting exhibits at MAK in a fun, creative and engaging way.
MAK Design Kids is a series of creative workshops for 8-12-year-olds (without an accompanying adult) where children´s own creativity plays the central role. The workshops are dedicated to different themes such as furniture, fashion, patterns, or specific techniques as well as digital developments. Typically, the workshops last about two hours. The children will get to know design processes and stages, develop their own ideas, try new techniques, or work with special materials and even digital devices.
The MAK School Program encompasses a vast array of activities designed for children and young adults ages 6-18. Guided tours on specific topics give participants an intensive insight into their topic of choice. They are held in a fun and engaging way and aimed at increasing interest and creating dialogue. They can even be tailor-made to cover a combination of topics based on pupils’ interests and prior knowledge. The tours usually take 60-90 minutes and can be combined with a workshop.
Another important and popular form of art education program at the MAK are the creative workshops. These are hands-on, material-oriented workshops, lasting between 60-120 minutes and packed with fun and creative ideas. Typically, the workshops complement a guided tour and follow-up on a topic that was at the centre of the guided tour.
