The Steinhofgründe Forest Playground is a beautiful big playground on a gigantic meadow in the middle of the Steinhofgründe. It´s by far the best playground in the Steinhofgründe recreational area and is located in the northeast part, not far from the entrance close to the Steinhof Fire Station (Johann-Staud-Straße). It´s an open-space (not fenced) forest playground with several play facilities and incredibly huge free area that can be used for running around, gymnastics acrobatic training or a picnic in the grass. The highlight of the playground is a carousel where old tires are used as a base and an artificially made hill with a tunnel which kids of all ages seem to find cool. Moreover, you will find numerous swings, a medium-difficulty climbing installation, a forest football pitch and some other play and sports facilities there. There´s no cafe or restaurant directly in the Steinhofgründe park area but nice simple restaurants can be found nearby such as the Grosses Schutzhaus Rosental and the Kleines Schutzhaus Rosental. Having said so, the Steinhofgründe is actually known as Vienna´s picnic destination par excellence so we would highly-recommend you go with the flow and bring your own picnic food. Kids can also play football, fly a kite or climb one of the many climbing trees here. As a bonus, you get a wonderful view of the landscape and sky. It can get crowded on weekends. If you are looking for more activities than just a playground, you can go hiking through the Steinhofgründe to the Dehnepark where you will find another great forest playground – the Dehnepark Forest Playground. Also worth a visit is the beautiful Otto Wagner Church Am Steinhof.
