Located just next to the Hofburg Imperial Palace, on the Michaelerplatz square, the Church of St. Michael is a lovely church boasting a special heritage: It was here where, shortly after Mozart’s death, his “Requiem” was first performed.
Today, the Church of St. Michael is visited mostly for its catacombs “populated” with coffins and graves. Did you know that about 4,000 people were buried here? The reason is simple and curious at the same time; due to the unusual underground environment, bodies don’t decompose in it.
Besides a visit to the crypt, the best way to experience the amazing church interiors is by visiting a classical music concert. We recommend you buy tickets online in advance, especially in peak tourist season.
The square in front of the church is particularly loved by children, since there are interesting Roman excavations there that you can view from above. Even more importantly, one of the biggest Fiaker standpoints happens to be located there as well, which means children can observe the Fiakers (Viennese horse-drawn carriages) from a close vicinity and even approach horses and vehicles.
