Heiligenstädter Park is an extensive park in Döbling, Vienna´s 19th district and one of the favorite outdoor destinations in the area. It´s very popular with families for its beauty as well as its three playgrounds. The upper portion, atop Hohe Warte hill, was originally a private garden owned by a famous banker’s family, the Rothschilds, who built an impressive botanical garden with a Japanese garden, greenhouses, and a gatehouse. Eventually, the Rothschild Garden was confiscated and the botanical gardens destroyed; though some parts were transferred to Kurpark Oberlaa and later to the School Gardens Kagran. The only part that remains is the gatehouse, now home to the local scout group Baden Powel 83. Visit the Scout Museum for one of the best ways to obtain more detailed information on Vienna’s scout movement). Today, the Rothschild Garden Hohe Warte at the Hohe Warte is the least-exciting of the three playgrounds in Heiligenstädter Park, though it’s also the one with the best views and surroundings. There are two other playgrounds at the park, one in the Grinzinger Straße and a little-known one that are located close to the Hintergärtengasse. Both are known as Heiligenstädter Park Playground and both are on the smaller-side, but still very exciting. The lower portion also features the Beethoven monument and, adjacent to the Rothschild Garden Hohe Warte part of the Heiligenstädter Park, the favorite Döblinger Bad. And let’s not forget the excellent view from atop the hill! All in all, the Heiligenstädter Park is definitely worth a visit, whether as after-museum fun from your visit to the nearby Beethoven Museum Heiligenstadt or the Beethoven Eroica House (currently closed), or even as a destination of its own.
