Altes AKH (Former General Hospital) is a lovely little downtown playground that belongs to Vienna’s most popular play areas for toddlers and young kids. But it’s not because of its special equipment; in fact, it only boasts a sand & mud installation, a slide, a sand pit, and a climbing facility, as well as several pieces of swinging equipment, such as swings, a nest, swinging cars, and swinging animals. However, Altes AKH owes its popularity to its exceptional location, which is very close to the city center and, at the same time, is in a relaxed park in the courtyard of the University Campus. Technically, it’s located in Alsergrund, Vienna’s 9th district, but it’s just a stone throw from Ringstrasse Boulevard. Formerly, the complex served as the General Hospital (Altes AKH), and this is where the name of the yard comes from. Today, besides the University Campus, it also hosts several restaurants and beer gardens that all have beautiful summer gardens and are all more or less kid-friendly. The most popular with families is the Universitätsbräu, which is adjacent to the playground, so it allows you to enjoy a beer while your kids are playing — provided that they don’t need your constant help when using the equipment, since the guest garden is separated from the playground by a fence. Another favorite option is the Stiegl Ambulanz just opposite the play area, which is the largest brewery and restaurant at Altes AKH Campus. Not only does it boast amazing interiors and a guest garden, but it also has a baby-changing station. In summer, the Salettl Summer Lounge, with its beach garden, is the highlight for kids. In winter, the Altes AKH (Former General Hospital) courtyard transforms into the Altes AKH Christmas Market, which is one of the most family-friendly Christmas markets in Vienna.
